I Analyzed 577 Broken Listings. Here Is What Actually Flips

Real data from 577 active for-parts listings: the median spread by category, which faults show up most, and the honest limits of what those numbers can tell you before you buy.

The first computer I ever owned, I built myself. I bought every part separately, the case, the motherboard, the graphics card, and put the whole thing together on my bedroom floor. When I finally hit the power button and it actually booted, that was it for me. I was hooked. Taking parts nobody else wanted and turning them into something that works is the same thing that makes flipping broken electronics fun. And after digging into the numbers behind my own site, it turns out it can pay too, as long as you are honest with yourself about what the numbers actually mean.

So I did something I had been meaning to do for a while. I pulled a snapshot of every active listing on Broke Fix Flip, 577 broken and "for parts or not working" items across power tools, electronics, appliances, and outdoor gear, and I added up what the data really says. Not opinions. Not vibes. The actual spread between what these things sell for broken and what a working one is worth.

First, what the "spread" is (and what it is not)

I want to be straight with you before I show a single number, because this is where most flip content lies to you. Every figure below is a spread: the gap between the as-is asking price of a broken listing and the working-condition resale value based on sold comps. That is the room you have to work with. It is not profit.

Profit is what is left after you buy the item, pay for the part, do the repair, eat the shipping and fees, and actually sell it. The spread is just the starting canvas. A big spread on a fault you cannot fix is worth nothing. A small spread on a five-minute repair can beat it. Keep that in your head the whole way through, because the data is a map, not a guarantee.

The rule I flip by: the spread tells you if a deal is worth looking at. Your own skill with the fault tells you if it is worth buying.

The headline numbers across all 577 listings

Here is the whole board at once. Across everything on the site right now, the typical broken listing looks like this:

  • Median as-is price: $60. That is what these things cost broken.
  • Median working value: $150. That is the sold-comp value of a working one.
  • Median spread: $90, or about 60% of the working value.

Sixty percent sounds huge, and it is the reason this whole thing works. But remember, that 60% is the raw canvas before parts and effort. The real question is which categories give you the most room and the least pain, and that is where it gets interesting.

Every category, side by side

This is the table I wish I had when I started. All medians, pulled from the live listings:

Look at that carefully, because the obvious read is the wrong one.

Electronics: the most volume and the biggest dollars, not the biggest percentage

Almost half of every listing is electronics, and it carries the fattest dollar spread at $113. That is the category with the most shots on goal. But notice the spread percentage is the lowest at 56%, because the buy-in is higher ($80 median) and working values run up fast. Electronics is where the money is, but it is also where the competition and the board-level risk live. A "no power" phone can hide three faults behind one calm sentence.

Power tools: cheap, common, and the thinnest margin on the board

A quarter of the site is power tools, and they are the cheapest thing to get into at a $49 median. But the spread is the thinnest, $70 and 59%. Here is the edge the table does not show you: a huge share of "dead" tools are not dead at all. The tool is fine and the battery pack is shot, and battery packs sell separately. That is the trick that turns a thin-margin category into an easy one, if you know the platform.

Appliances and outdoor: fewer listings, fatter percentages, more hassle

These two have the best spread percentages on the board, 67% and 68%. That is not an accident. Fewer people want to deal with a bulky mixer or a mower that will not start, so the broken prices sink and the room opens up. The catch is physical: they are heavy, annoying to ship, and harder to test after the fix. The margin is real, but you earn it with your back, not just your bench.

The fault that shows up more than any other

I also counted what is actually wrong with these things, and one family of faults runs the table. When I tallied up the stated faults, the pattern was clear:

  • "Won't power on" type faults: 49 listings
  • Battery faults: 18 listings
  • Charging faults: 17 listings
  • Screen or LCD faults: 20 listings
  • Cracked housing or glass: 8 listings

Power, battery, and charging faults together are the single biggest group on the whole site by a wide margin. And that is the best news in this entire article, because those are frequently the cheapest faults to fix. A dead battery, a bad charging port, a fried power supply, these are the repairs with known parts and known steps. The word "dead" scares off most buyers, which is exactly why the spread on those listings stays wide. The scariest-sounding fault is often the friendliest one to your wallet.

Cracked screens are the opposite story. They are honest about what they are, everyone knows the fix, so the price already reflects it and the room is tighter. You make your money on the faults other people are afraid to touch, not the ones they can price in their sleep.

The number that keeps you honest: 75 vs 25

One more stat, and it is the one that matters most for staying out of trouble. Of all 577 listings, 75% had a fault the seller actually stated, and 25% did not. That quarter is where beginners lose money. A listing that just says "for parts, no returns" with no real description is a coin flip you are paying for. When the seller tells you what is wrong, you can price the repair. When they do not, you are buying a mystery, and mysteries are how a good spread turns into a dead loss on your shelf.

My honest advice from the data: spend most of your time in that 75%. Let the vague listings go to someone with more time and more risk tolerance than you. There is enough clearly-described inventory that you never have to gamble.

What this data cannot tell you

I promised to be straight, so here is the fine print I hold myself to. These numbers are working-condition comps against as-is prices. They are not records of what sold, and they are not profit. They do not know your skill level, your parts supplier, or whether the specific unit in front of you has one fault or five. Two listings with the same spread can end in a clean $100 flip and a $60 paperweight depending on things no database can see.

What the data is good for is aiming. It tells you where the room tends to be, which faults tend to be worth chasing, and which listings to walk past. That is most of the battle. The rest is you, one listing at a time, getting a little faster at reading them.

How I would use all of this

If I were starting over with these numbers in hand, my plan would be simple:

  1. Pick one category you can actually repair and live there until your eye is fast. For most people getting started, power tools with the battery-swap trick or electronics with charging faults is the softest landing.
  2. Hunt the "dead" and "won't power on" listings where the seller stated the fault. That is where the fear discount lives.
  3. Skip the mystery listings in that 25% unless the price is so low the whole thing is basically free parts.
  4. Do the after-parts math before you buy, every time. A 60% spread means nothing if the part eats 50 of it.
